When India was granted freedom by UK Army chief was the CIN C. And was ranked. After the Prime minister and Gen Cariappa later Field Marshal was the C in C. however. Soon Chiefs of all services were made of same rank as General, Airchief Marshal, Admiral. the presence was down graded and year after it was still downgraded. And they stand no where now. This was purposely done to reduce importance of services compared to civilian officers with vested interests.
