WHY 1962 DEBACLE REPORT IS NOT OPEN FOR PUBLIC
col prof DR k prabhakar Rao
the open rift between Gen thimmayya and vk krishna menon the mod before 1962 war is well known to all old timers .Gen thimmayya was an outstanding General and commanded great respect internationally. he was ww ii veteran as a brigadier commanding a brigade in Burma front. But all his proposals for building up army in all aspects were thwarted by menon.Infact nehruji was much worried about army being strong. Nehruji the PM played into menons hands and vexed up Gen thimmayya resigned. there was an uproar in Parliament. a worried PM some how prevailed on Thimmayya to withdraw his resignation and as a loyal soldier the general agreed. However the Pm let the General down in Parliament although the General with drew his resignation. things moved rapidly and Gen thimmayya retired from service. gen PN thapar the blue eyed boy of menon took over as chief.LT GEN sppThorat who was recommended as the next chief by Gen thimmayya that was approved by the president Rajendra prasad was over looked by the coterie of Nehru and menon. Thapar was the person used by Menon to attribute some charges against his chief .What followed under GenThapar was the utter defeat of our army at the hands of PLA of China that haunts us eternally. sensing American military intervention china declared ceasefire and India was on streets with begging bowl for purchase of arms and ammunition and equipment..Gen thapar resigned after leading our Army into great defeat and disaster and humiliation. with in two years Nehru died with broken heart and as a failed man. menon went into oblivion booted out. Gen thimmayya after retirement commanded UN forces in cyprus and passed away there. Lot of water has flown down the himalayan battle grounds since 1962 and we retrieved some respect after 1971 war. but Chinese threat is always a challenge and we have not yet over come the fear of China. why hide the report even now. Whole country should know about dark deeds of the coterie. it should not become another file like netajis file about his reported death.
