LEON FELDHENDLER, JEWISH NAZI RESISTANCE, WW II

Leon Feldhendler (Lejb Feldhendler) (1910 – 6 April 1945) was a Polish Jewish resistance fighter known for his role in organizing the 1943 prisoner uprising at the Sobibor extermination camp together with Alexander Pechersky. Prior to his deportation to Sobibor, Feldhendler had been head of the Judenrat ] ("Jewish Council") in his village of Żółkiewka, Lublin Voivodeship, in German-occupied Poland. In 1943 the uprising at Sobibor led by thecRussian POW officer took place. A section went for the kill of Nazi guards and officers where others attacked the armoury.  many were killed by guards during escape. About 170were killed once they were captured again.  Many of the escapees joined partisans. And eighty of them died in combat. 62 survived and  Leon was among them along with the Russian officer.  Leon  hid in Lubin till Poland was freed and war was over. sadly Leon was shot at his flat when he tried to examine some disturbance outside the flat. Although he escaped with injuries he died after surgery in four days.. He was posthumously awarded by Polish President after his death.
