He became a victim of violence when he was shot dead by Nathuram Vinayak Godse of Hindu Maha Sabha on 30 January 1948 at Birla Mandir temple in Delhi .Godse was the editor of Maratha news paper Agrani and Narayan Apte was his associate who procured weapon for him from Gwalior from Dr Parachure. Both Godse and Apte were sentenced to death and executed by hanging.
Gandhi was elevated as father of nation.
