He was a SS master Sergent i.e Hauptscharfuhrer and served at Buchenwald camp as guard. He was great sadist and tortured camp inmates brutally. He got two Austrian priests crucified upside down. He used to torture prisoners and later kill them by injecting air into veins or carbolic acid. He had underground cellar under his office table in which he hid his torture instruments. Under the orders of Heinrich Miller a judicial inquiry was conducted at the camp in which the commandant Otto koch his wife Ilse koch were accused for the allegations of corruption and these were investigated. Later Otto koch was executed by a firing squad. The charges of excessive cruelty by Martin Sonner on prisoners were investigated and he was demoted. After war, he managed to hide and lived happily till he was found out in 1957 for 101 torture deaths at the camp. He was tried by a west German court and he was convicted of 25 deaths and was sentenced to life term. His appeal was rejected by federal court. He died in prison hospital in June 1988 at the age of 73 years.
