Barabati fort is located at a distance of 8 km from the heart of cuttack city in the state of odi sha. it was built by G anga rulers in the year 1299. Today what remains is the fort gate and a huge mound of earth where once a seven storied palace stood built by the Rulers. An old temple is also located in the complex. T he last Hindu ruler laid down his life fighting the forces of Bengal sultan Suleiman in 1568. T he fort was badly damaged during Muslim invasions and later. It also must have suffered serious damage during the invasion of Kalapahad the general of Bengal ruler.earlier the fort was protected by two outer rings of huge fort walls and the main fort was probably 100 acres big. A very big open ground is made available in fort complex for various activities by the govt. the fort is built of laterite stones and the fort is on an island formed by maha nadi river and its tributary. the fort changed hands after going to Muslim rulers. it went to Marathas afterdecline of Mughal power and then to the E nglish men . Cuttack is well connected by trains to all parts of I ndia and has air services. cuttack is on the main broad gauge line between kazipeta in telangana to Calcutta via V izag.
