He was a Roman Catholic.He worked as skilled worker before he became coal miner. However, he settled as a journalist finally. He got married. Soon he joined Nazi resistance activities. He was known for his non violent rhetoric against Nazism and Adolf Hitler. He was under constant watch by authorities and was arrested on 12 Sept 1944 after the failure of 20 July plot. Before the plot, he constantly endured interrogations and house searches and persecution.. He was tried and sentenced to death by people's court on 15 January 45 and was hanged on 23 January 1945 at Plotzensee prison in Berlin. He was beatified by Pope John Paul II at Vatican at St. Peter's square on 7 Oct 2001 as he died for the faith.
